Taking public transit doesn’t have to be difficult thanks to a number of technological advancements working to simplify the process.
With options ranging from mobile apps that plan your bus route to micro-mobility transportation options like e-scooters, commuting car-free in North Texas has never been easier.
Apps
DART’s award-winning GoPass app aims to simplify the entire public transit experience from fare-payment to route-planning. The free app — available on both iPhone and Android — lets commuters choose their fare and pay accordingly, with options ranging from hourly to day to monthly passes.
The app’s route-planning features also make bus and train commutes easy: simply choose a destination and let the app tell you how to get there and when you’ll arrive.
GoPass even has real-time route tracking, meaning on particularly cold winter days, you can know when your bus or train will arrive, saving you long waits at a chilly bus stop or train station.
But what if your phone doesn’t have a high-speed internet connection? An app titled “ezRide Dallas - Offline Public Transport Trip Planner” is here to help. While ezRide Dallas doesn’t offer real-time route tracking like GoPass, it does still take the guesswork out of finding a destination via public transit.
Alternatives
We get it. There are some destinations where buses just don’t go. But, that doesn’t mean you have to drive yourself there every day, racking up shocking expenses along the way.
Instead, consider a rideshare app like TryParkingIt. Not only does carpooling help protect the environment, but it also can cut your commute costs down to just a few dollars a day.
Last Mile
So, you took the bus to work. But your bus stop is still three blocks away from your office. What now?
If your workplace is in an urban area like downtown Dallas, you’re in luck. You can pull out your phone, locate a nearby e-scooter, and fly to work in no time (and often for less than $2).
In Legacy, local prohibitions and state laws prohibit you from using a scooter in the area at this time.
But that’s no reason to worry. You can still use your phone to hail a low-cost ride to the office. DART’s GoLink will pick you up from a bus or train station and take you to the front door of your office for free if you’ve already paid a DART fare that day.
If you haven’t, a GoLink trip will cost you $1.50 each way. That’s still considerably cheaper than parking in most urban areas.
